Hi, my name is Kyle Stevens. Welcome to my site.
We're all more than a description of what we do, but for the purpose of this site I'll describe myself as a performing songwriter, producer, blogger and professional nerd rocker.
Let me tell you how I got here...
I'm in no way one of those folks who, "Knew they would be in music since they could walk". In fact, I really was annoyed by music in general as young guy and preferred playing baseball over listening to the radio any day. Then as in many tales of prepubescence go, I started noticing I wasn't at the level of many of my peers in athletic ability and sports started to become less and less fun for me. The summer between the ages of 12 and 13 was important for me as that's when I really started to think maybe playing guitar might be a fun thing to try. At the same time, bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and The Cranberries dominated the airwaves in the early 90's boom with inescapably catchy hooks and melodies.
I stared to become obsessed with the idea of creating songs like my quickly developing heroes.
So, I asked for a guitar for my 13th birthday and received a 3/4 size "Harmony" electric; something just enough to make sounds on but not too much out of my family's pocket in case I abandoned the idea altogether.
I had never had so much fun.
In the months that followed my friends and I started writing songs (if you could call them that) and performing at our middle school/high school events and for anyone that would listen to us in the form of a band called LAYMANS TERMS. From 1995 to when the group disbanded 2004, I learned songwriting on front lines releasing 5 albums under the LT moniker (Look for those albums to be available digitally online for the first time ever later this year).
In 2004, I took a short break from music. I learned to cook, paint, and be a pet owner. Still, I missed performing and stepped back into the game this time under my name as a solo artist. I really enjoyed the newness and challenge of relying squarely on oneself, and I think during this time I grew as a singer and a songwriter.
After performing under my name for year or so, I began to put together my 2007 release, Songs From The Orange Room. It was a celebration-esque E.P. as it was also around the time I began to work for Island Film Group as their on-staff songwriter (a position I still have today). During the recording of SFTOR I was listening to a lot of NEW ORDER, SMITHS, and SHAWN COLVIN; all of which you can hear as influences if you listen for them.
Shortly after the disc and a few short road tours behind it, I wrote and recorded an album with FARSCAPE actress Gigi Edgley called, ...So It Seems. The 5 song E.P. was released in Fall of 2008 and was debuted at FARSCAPE CON in Burbank.
In 2008 my old LT band mate Matt Edington and I rekindled the creative spark we once shared and put out a self-titled album with a short lived band under the name COLLIDER. To date, I feel it contains some of the darkest songs I've written.
Also in 2008 friend, fellow comic book aficionado, and local business owner Jim Demonakos and I formed KIRBY KRACKLE. The idea had been running between us for a few years in the thought of why was there a lack of comic book/superhero/video game themed music? We wrote, recorded, and released our self-titled debut in January of 2009; 11 songs about dating super-heroines, competing in a Mario-Kart race, and social commentary regarding the Zombie Apocalypse. We hit the road making our way across North America and the comic convention circuit to thankfully great reviews and a whole lot of folks excited about the fun we were having.
Earlier this year we released our follow-up sophomore disc, E For Everyone; 11 more songs about debauchery in a club of cartoon girls, road-tripping to comic cons, and playing video games with your sweetie. WIRED reviewed it calling E4E "Geek Rock Perfection", and we've been lucky enough to perform with and get public endorsements from head MARVEL COMICS chap Joe Quesada.
Since then we've been continually performing and attending comic conventions everyone under the KK moniker and having an absolute blast.
In summer of 2010, I decided to release the first KS solo material in 3 years under the form of 2 iTunes exclusive singles, "Vouch For Me" and "Matches In The Walls". Both are available on iTunes now.
That's where I'm at in the adventure...thanks for joining me and listening.
Cheers and be well,
KS
